TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Varsity Softball team won the elusive District Championship with a pair of victories at Traverse City West High School on Friday. In game 1, the Wildcats faced a team in Marquette that has often been the one ending their season. This year, it was the Wildcats that prevailed in a 6-1 dominating victory over the Redmen. Jade Schultz struck out 11 in the victory and was helped offensively by a two-run 1st inning. Abbie Funk's RBI triple got the Wildcats on the board early, and they quickly made it 2-0 on an RBI Sacrifice fly by Allie DeRocher. The Wildcats blew open a 2-1 game in the fifth with four more runs. Emma Fraser had a two-run single to score Dayna LaBell and Sydney Chojnacki. Funk singled with two outs and Emily Vivian had a two-run single to score Fraser and Funk.
In the championship, the Wildcats faced the BNC runner-up TC Central Trojans. Alpena again jumped on the Trojans by taking a 4-0 lead into the 6th inning before Central rallied to tie the game. Emma Fraser, who was 5-for-5 in the game, had two hits in the seventh inning. Alpena sent 12 batters to the plate and took advantage of several walks in their 8-run inning.
The Wildcats (25-11) will travel to Saginaw Valley State University on June 9 for the Regionals.
