Trojans Rally, Defeat Wildcats in Five

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Volleyball team powered to victories in sets two and three but couldn't finish off the Trojans in a five-game loss on Thursday night in the annual Pink Game at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  The Trojans jumped on the Wildcats early in set one as the height of Central's front line paced them to an 11-0 lead.  Alpena managed to climb back into the game thanks to the serving of Meghan Roznowski, but the Trojans finished set one with the 25-19 win.  Alpena made quick adjustments to turn the game with 25-21 and 25-23 victories in sets two and three.  Kate Skiba's strong serving in set two allowed the Wildcats to make a 7-0 run and claim a 12-7 lead.  After the Trojans tied the set at 20, Alpena scored five of the last six points to even the match.  Set three would be a battle as the two teams found themselves tied on eight different occasions.  Alpena would make the critical points when necessary for the 25-23 win.  The Trojans took control of set four, leading 19-10, thanks to the strong play of Emma Turnquist, Sarah Auger, and Maggie McCrary.  After winning the set 25-21, the Trojans owned the winner take all fifth set leading 10-3 with relative ease.  Alpena would attempt a late rally but the Trojans finished off their comeback with a 15-7 victory.

The Wildcats were led by Edie Zann's 16 kills and Emma Dockrill's 13.  Alison DeRocher contributed six critical kills during the Wildcat surge in sets two and three.

Alpena (13-11-3, 2-4 BNC) travel to Gaylord on October 9.
