Wildcats Fall in Overtime in Season Finale

4.0 years ago @ 10:27AM

ALPENA, MI - Eli Winter was stopped short on a two-point conversion in overtime as St. Johns held off Alpena, 21-20, in the regular-season finale at Park Family Field at Wildcat Stadium.  The Wildcats took the game's opening possession into Redwing territory before being stopped on 4th and 4.  St. Johns capitalized as Jaymn Medlock found DeMarquis Washington wide open on a halfback pass to give the Redwings the 7-0 lead.  Eli Winter got the Wildcats on the board early in the 2nd Quarter when he got loose for the 25-yard Touchdown but a failed two-point conversion cut the lead to 7-6.  Late in the half St. Johns was driving into Alpena territory before Brian Frisch was able to intercept a Luke Kudwa pass to keep the score at 7-6 into the halftime locker room.

After forcing a three and out on the opening possession of the 2nd half by St. Johns, the Wildcats put together a solid drive sparked by a big pass play from Ryan Voltz to Eli Winter.  Jordan Schultz capped off the drive with a 7-yard  run and the two-point conversion to give the Wildcats the 14-7 lead.  The Redwings responded with a lengthy drive into Wildcat territory and converted a long 4th and goal play as Kudwa scrambled to find Adam Waszak in the back of the endzone to tie the game at 14-14.  Neither team was able to reclaim the lead as the clock expired in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The Wildcats won the coin toss and decided to go on defense first.  St. Johns took the lead in overtime on another pass from Kudwa to Waszak to give the Redwings the 21-14 lead.  Alpena would face a 4th and goal at the 3 when Winter took the pitch left and busted into the endzone to get the Wildcats to 21-20.  Alpena would make the choice to go for two and was stopped short on the Winter pitch.

Eli Winter finished the game with 168 yards on 28 carries, while Jordan Schultz had nine carried for 39 yards.  Alpena finishes the season 4-5, which is the highest win total since a 4-5 season in 2014.
