ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got off to a fast start but could not hold off the Traverse City West Titans in Thursday's night 50-44 loss at the Gillespie Gymnasium. Alpena scored the game's first thirteen points behind Jade Schultz's eight straight points. The Titans would climb back into the game, trailing 14-7 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Schultz got into foul trouble late into the 2nd Quarter and West's Tracey Looze found hit a pair of three-pointers to force a 25-25 tie at the halftime break. West took advantage of sloppy Wildcat ball control in the 3rd Quarter to take a 46-35 lead into the final quarter. Alpena fought back to make it 46-44 thanks to a 9-0 run sparked by an Abbie Funk three and four Madeline Voltz free throws. Alpena could not take advantage of late-game mistakes and West converted four free throws to end the comeback attempt. The Wildcats (2-4, 1-2 BNC) are off until January 4 when they host UP rival Escanaba.
