AHS Hires Eric MacKenzie to Lead Wildcat Boys Baseball Program

Alpena, MI – Alpena High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Eric MacKenzie as its new Boys Varsity Baseball Coach. MacKenzie has been coaching baseball for the last 4 years and has spent 10 years coaching student-athletes catching skills and techniques. Eric also serves on the Little League Board which is a direct feeder program for Alpena Baseball. Eric attended Alpena High School where he played hockey, baseball and football. Eric has worked for MDHHS for the last 12 years as a Children’s Services Specialist/Juvenile Justice Specialist.


“We are excited to have Eric Mackenzie lead our baseball program” said Studley. Eric follows in his dad's footsteps and knows what it takes to have a successful program. “Eric brings a great knowledge of baseball and played catcher for Hope College for 4 years.” “Eric's passion for Alpena High School Baseball and our student-athletes was one of the many positives during the interview process.”

MacKenzie said, “I am excited for this opportunity. I played baseball at Alpena High School and enjoyed my time as a student-athlete. I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of Alpena High School Baseball that was established by the previous coaches. I can’t wait to meet our great student-athletes and begin my tenure as the baseball coach."

Wildcats finish Regular Season with a pair of losses

KALKASKA, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Varsity Baseball team wrapped up the 2018 Regular Season by dropping a pair of non-league games to Kalkaska on Tuesday.  in game 1, Bruz Copping and Logan Guthrie split the pitching duties in Kalkaska's 5-4 victory.  Clay Donajkowski, Chris DeRocher and Chandler Lantz contributed two hits each.

In game 2, Guthrie's 2-run Home Run was not enough as Kalkaska earned the sweep with a 7-4 win.  Lucas Crosby took the loss on the mound going four innings.  Chris DeRocher added a triple and Lars MacArthur and Aidan Goike each hitting a double.

Alpena (14-12) will play Traverse City Central at 11:00am on Friday in the District Semi-Finals at TC West High School.

Wildcats Sweep Falcons

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team swept the Ogemaw Heights Falcons in a non-conference Doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.  In game 1, Logan Guthrie hit a solo home run, Aidan Goike added four hits, and Bruz Copping finished with 5 RBIs in the Wildcats' 17-7 victory.

In game 2, the Wildcats fel behind 2-0 early but eventually got the offense rolling in their 4-2 victory.  Guthrie scored 3 of the Wildcats 4 runs, one came via the long ball.  

Alpena (12-10, 4-6 BNC) host Melvindale on Saturday.

Wildcats Sweep Trojans

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team played spoiler in the BNC race by sweeping the Traverse City Central Traojans on Tuesday afternoon.  The Trojans entered the day atop the BNC standings with a 6-2 record but the sweep by Alpean gave Petoskey and TC West the co-Conference title.  In Game 1, Bruz Copping pitched five no-hit innings and went the distance for the eight strikeout 6-2 victory.  Chris DeRocher had two hits and scored a run while Chandler Lantz, Logan Guthrie, and Clay Donajkowski each added RBIs.

In Game 2, the Wildcats fell behind early but rallied with seven runs over a three inning span for the 7-4 victory.  On the mound, Lucas Crosby earned the victory allowing three runs on six hits.  DeRocher hit a mammoth 2-run Home Run down the left field line and Bruz Copping added a two-tun triple.

Alpena (10-10-1, 4-6 BNC) host Ogemaw Heights on Wednesday night.

Petoskey sweeps Wildcats

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team dropped a pair of Big North Conference games to Petoskey on Tuesday afternoon.  In game 1, the Northmen blew open a 1-1 game in the op of the 7th with four runs to earn a 5-1 victory.  Bruz Copping's solo Home Run gave Alpena an early 1-0 lead until Petoskey scratched across a run in the 6th.  Lucas Crosby's strong 6-innings on the mound wasn't enough as he took the loss after walking the lead off man in the 7th that eventually score during Petoskey's 4-run 7th.

In game 2, Alpena again couldn't hold an early lead as Petoskey rallied for the 11-5 win.  Chris DeRocher's 2-run RBI in the 1st gave the Wildcats the early lead.  Petoskey took the lead for good in the 2nd with 3-runs.  DeRocher was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs while Chandler Lantz was 2-for-3 with a Home Run and two runs scored.

Wildcats Finish 2nd in Saginaw

SAGINAW, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team finished 2nd in the Saginaw Heritage Invitational on Saturday.  The Wildcats edged Freeland in the opening game, 2-0, before falling to host Saginaw Heritage, 5-1, in the Championship Game.

The Wildcats (6-6-1, 2-2 BNC) have a busy week ahead as they host Petoskey (Tuesday) and Cheboygan (Wednesday) before traveling to TC West (Thursday) and Sault Ste Marie (Saturday).

Blue Devils Sweep Wildcats

ALPENA, MI - Gaylord broke open a 3-3 tie in Game 1 with a 5-Run 7th on their way to an 8-3 win. Logan Guthrie hit two solo Home Runs in the losing effort. In game 2, Alpena was limited to just 4 hits in a 2-0 loss to the Blue Devils.

Wildcats win McKenzie Tournament

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Baseball team defended their home turf and won the McKenzie Tournament over the weekend. Alpena went 2-1 over the weekend with victories over Standish-Sterling (9-0) and #16 Sault Ste Marie (13-0). The lone loss was to #20 Grosse Pointe North, 3-0. The Wildcats won the round-robin style tournament via tiebreakers. 

Baseball finishes 2nd in Midland Tournament

MIDLAND, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team kicked off the 2018 season by finishing 2nd in the Midland Tournament on Saturday, April 21.  In game 1, the Wildcats pounded Midland Dow 15-4.  Lucas Crosby tossed a complete game earning the win as he allowed no earned runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out three.  Bruz Copping hit a grand slam to break the game wide open, finishing with five RBIs in win.

In the Championship game, the Wildcats dropped the Championship Game to Saginaw Heritage, 4-1, in a rematch from last year's Regional Semi-Finals.  Copping got hit with the loss, going five innings, allowing four runs, one earned on three hits, while walking one and fanning four.  Logan Guthrie tallied the lone RBI for the Wildcats when he doubled in Clay Donajkowski.

Wildcats win opening game of McKenzie Tournament

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Baseball team opened the McKenzie Tournament with a 9-0 victory over Standish-Sterling on Friday afternoon. Lars MacArthur got the start for the Wildcats and struck out six while allowing only two hits.  Offensively MacArthur added two hits including an RBI while Clay Donajkowski added a two-run double to blow open the game.  Colin Donajkowski also had a two-run single and an RBI single by Owen Limback.

Alpena (4-2-1, 2-0 BNC) will host #17th ranked Sault Ste Marie Saturday morning at 10:00am.

Wildcats lose, tie to Swan Valley

SAGINAW, MI - The Alpena Boys Baseball team travled to Swan Valley on Thursday for a pair of non-league contests.  In game 1, walks and untimely errors allowed the Vikings to escape with a 3-1 victory.  Chris DeRocher, Aidan Goike and Clay Donajkowski all pitched while Donajkowski scored Alpena’s only run on an RBI single by Goike.

In game 2, the Wildcats fell behind 7-0 before rallying to tie the game before it was called for darkness with the game tied at 7-7.  Logan Guthrie and Lars MacArthur each had two hits and Anthony Berg had a two-run single to tie the game.

Alpena (3-2-1) hosts the McKenzie Tournament this weekend.

Wildcats Sweep Vikings

CADILLAC, MI - The Alpena Varsity Baseball team opened up Big North play by sweeping a pair of games in Cadillac on Tuesday.  In game 1, the Wildcats got a pitching gem from Lucas Crosby in their 8-0 victory.  Crosby earned the win allowing only four hits and striking out 11 while Logan Guthrie had two hits and three RBI and Chris DeRocher had two hits and two RBI.

In game 2, Bruz Copping took to the mound and struck out 12 Vikings in Alpena's 14-3 victory.  Alpena collected 12 hits and got two each from Kyle VanDusen, Chandler Lantz, Guthrie and Colby Plowman.

Alpena (3-1, 2-0 BNC) hosts the MacKenzie Invitational this weekend along with Sault Ste. Marie, Standish and Grosse Pointe North.

Wildcats Season Ends in District Loss to Trojans

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Alpena High School Baseball team's quest to defend their 2017 District Championship came to an abrupt end at the hands of the Traverse City Central Trojans on Friday.  Alpena, which has struggled with errors all season in key spots, was again plagued with mistakes as the Trojans scored four runs in the 1st and four more in the third to pull away for the 8-0 win.  Bruz Copping started the game before being relieved by Lucas Crosby.  Chris DeRocher, Chandler Lantz, Owen Limback and Aidan Goike added  the only four hits for Alpena.  The Wildcats finish the season with a 14-13 record.
