Redettes Eliminate Wildcats

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team struggled to match the post play of Marquette and were eliminated from MHSAA Tournament play, 59-24, on Monday night at GIllespie Gymnasium.  Marquette got 18 points from Madison Carter and 16 points from Aspen Michelin as the Redettes dominated in the paint throughout the night.  Alpena was led by Maddie Voltz with eight points and Jade Schultz with seven points.  The Wildcats finish the season 11-10 overall.

Wildcats End Regular Season With Win

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team ended the Regular Season with a 55-44 victory over Traverse City Central on Friday night at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  The Wildcats started strong as they began the game on a 15-4 run thanks to solid defense and clutch offense from Jade Schultz and the Funk twins.  The Wildcats were able to maintain their lead throughout the first half to hold a 35-21 lead at the break.  The Trojans would begin to chip away at the Wildcat lead thanks to rebounding and defense.  After a Carina Stewart bucket the lead for Alpena was down to 51-42 midway through the 4th quarter.  Alpena began forcing turnovers to keep the lead from shrinking any further and held on for an eleven point victory.  Maddie Voltz led the Wildcats with 15 points, followed by 10 from Abbie Funk.  Alpena (11-9) open District play on Monday night when they host Marquette at 6pm.

Wildcats Earn Senior Night Victory Over Northmen

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team completed a season sweep of Petoskey with a 41-25 victory on Tuesday night.  Prior to the game the Wildcats honored their Senior Class and then started Mollie Girard, Amanda Johnson, Maddy Voltz, Taylor Tolsdorf, and Jessica Leeck.  The two teams struggled offensively in the opening quarter as the Wildcats held a 12-7 lead.  The Wildcats and Northmen played an even 2nd quarter until a three by Taylor Tolsford pushed the lead to 15-12.  Mollie Girard finished the half with a banked-in three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Wildcats an 18-12 lead at the break.  The Wildcats slowly began extending their lead in the third quarter thanks to a Macy Dickinson three-pointer at the buzzer.  The lead grew to 20 in the 4th after a three from each of the Funk twins.  Girard led the Wildcats with 9 points while Allie Funk had seven.  The Wildcats (10-8, 4-4 BNC) host Gaylord on Thursday night.

Tough Shooting Night Dooms Wildcats

SAULT STE MARIE, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team struggled to get going offensively and fell 46-28 to the Blue Devils on Monday night.  Both teams struggled in the opening half as the Blue Devils held a 16-7 lead at the break.  The Blue Devils picked up the defensive intensity stiffing the Wildcats throughout the night.  Jade Schultz led the Wildcats with 14 points.  Alpena (8-7, 3-3 BNC) travel to Traverse City West on Thursday night.

ROSE CITY, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got 29 points from Jade Schultz and rolled to a 71-52 victory over Ogemaw Heights on Saturday afternoon.

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got off to a quick start and held on for a 47-39 non-conference win over Tawas on Monday night.  The Wildcats took the early lead thanks to Jade Schultz scoring nine of her game-high nineteen points in the opening eight minutes.  After trailing 29-17 at the half, the Braves opened the 2nd half scoring eight of the first eleven points to cut the lead to 32-25.  After a timeout, the Wildcats responded by scoring nine points of their own to take a commanding 41-25 lead into the final quarter.  Maddie Voltz and Allie Funk each scored six points to go along with Schultz's big night.  The Wildcats (7-6, 3-3 BNC) host Traverse City Central on Friday.

Wildcats Earn 6th Win

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team started strong and held on for a 54-42 non-conference victory over Cheboygan on Tuesday night at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  The opening quarter was a story of runs as Alpena opened the game on a 10-0 run followed by an 11-1 run by the Chiefs.  Cheboygan opened the 2nd quarter by taking their only lead of the game on a layup by Shelby Woiderski.  Alpena took the lead for good after Jade Schultz hit her first career three-point shot to ignite a 10-2 run to take a 29-26 lead into the halftime break.  The 3rd quarter would prove to the difference as the Wildcats scored the final eight points to take a 44-32 lead into the final eight minutes.  Abbie Funk led the Wildcats with 13 points and Maddie Voltz chipped in with 10 points.  Alpena (6-6, 3-3 BNC) is scheduled to play at TC West on Thursday night.

Wildcats Win Third Straight

PETOSKEY, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team used clutch free throw shooting to knock off BNC rival Petoskey, 48-39, on Friday night.  Both teams struggled offensively as the Northmen led 13-11 at the halftime break.  Trailing 30-27 entering the final quarter, the Wildcats turned up the pressure by going to a full court press to slow down the Northmen.  Offensively, Maddie Voltz caught fire scoring scored eight of her 10 points in the 4th Quarter.  With Alpena clinging to the lead late, the Northmen opted to foul and put the Wildcats on the line.  Alpena iced the game going 7-for-8 from the line in the final 1:25, including a perfect 4-for-4 from Allie Funk.  Jade Schultz was the leading scorer for Alpena with 16 points.  Alpena (5-5, 3-2 BNC) travel to Ogemaw Heights on Thursday.

Wildcats Cruise Past Tigers

LINCOLN, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team started slowly but recovered to cruise past Alcona, 58-39, on Monday night at Lincoln Alcona High School.  The Tigers took the momentum early and took a 13-11 lead after the opening quarter.  Alpena went on a 10-0 to start the 2nd quarter to take the lead for good, sparked by a pair of Abbie Funk three-pointers.  Alpena used four three-pointers in the opening half to outscore the Tigers 21-9 in the closing minutes of the half to take a commanding halftime lead.  The Wildcats continued their hot streak by outscoring Alcona 18-2 in the 3rd quarter to take a 52-22 lead.  The Wildcats were led by Allie DeRocher with 11 points while Mollie Girard, Abbie Funk and Taylor Baker each contributed with eight points.  Alpena (4-5) travel to Tawas on Wednesday night.

Wildcats Use Strong Second Half for BNC Win at TC Central

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got a strong second half and pulled away for a 52-43 Big North Conference win over the TC Central Trojans on Thursday night.  The Wildcats led 25-23 at the half thanks to aggressive defense and timely scoring.  Alpena was led offensively by the Funk twins; Abbie Funk with 12 and Allie Funk with 11 points respectively.  Maddie Voltz was the leading scorer with 12 points. Madison Goodwin of TC Central led all scorers with 14 points.  Thursday night was the first victory for Alpena over the Trojans since a 52-42 Wildcats win in January of 2014.  The Wildcats (3-5, 2-2 BNC) travel to Alcona on Monday night.

Wildcats Fall to Eskymos

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team started strong but failed to finish in a 68-58 loss to Escanaba on Friday night at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  The Wildcats started strong from behind the arc after threes from Abbie Funk and Mollie Girard gave Alpena the 10-4 lead.  Escanaba responded to take a 17-14 lead late in the quarter.  Anna Young converted a traditional three-point play to tie the game at 17 after the 1st Quarter.  Escanaba opened the 2nd Quarter on a 10-run to take a 27-17 lead.  Alpena responded with long-range shooting as Girard hit two threes and Allie Funk also hit a long-range shot as the Wildcats finished the quarter on a 13-4 run.  Macy Dickinson capped the first half with a buzzer-beating three to draw the Wildcats to within one, 31-30, at the break.  Escanaba took control of the game in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 16-8 behind Nicole Kamin and Lexi Chaillier.  The Wildcats responded in the fourth quarter by chipping away at the lead to tie the game at 55-55 with four minutes to play.  Alpena took a brief 58-57 lead after Abbie Funk converted a three-point play with 3:08 to play.  Escanaba took over from there finishing the game on an 11-0 run.  Abbie Funk was the leading scorer with 12 points, while Mollie Girard added 11 points and Allie Funk scored eight.  Alpena (2-5, 1-2 BNC) travel to Traverse City Central on January 10.

Titans Rally Past Wildcats

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got off to a fast start but could not hold off the Traverse City West Titans in Thursday's night 50-44 loss at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  Alpena scored the game's first thirteen points behind Jade Schultz's eight straight points.  The Titans would climb back into the game, trailing 14-7 at the end of the 1st Quarter.  Schultz got into foul trouble late into the 2nd Quarter and West's Tracey Looze found hit a pair of three-pointers to force a 25-25 tie at the halftime break.  West took advantage of sloppy Wildcat ball control in the 3rd Quarter to take a 46-35 lead into the final quarter.  Alpena fought back to make it 46-44 thanks to a 9-0 run sparked by an Abbie Funk three and four Madeline Voltz free throws.  Alpena could not take advantage of late-game mistakes and West converted four free throws to end the comeback attempt.  The Wildcats (2-4, 1-2 BNC) are off until January 4 when they host UP rival Escanaba.

Wildcats Fall to Cadillac

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team couldn't overcome six Cadillac three-pointers as they fell, 49-40, to the Vikings on Friday night at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  Alpena started off strong as Maddie Voltz paced the offense early to a 16-10 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter.  The Vikings then began to hit from long range as Makenna Bryant and Molly Anderson got hot and helped take a 29-25 halftime lead over Alpena.  In the second half, the Wildcats would cut the lead to three on two separate occasions but could not get any closer.  Voltz led the Wildcat offensive effort with nine points, Jad Schultz added six points, and Allison DeRocher chipped in five.  Alpena (2-3, 1-1 BNC) host TC West on Thursday night.

Wildcats Hang On to Defeat Vikings

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team got up big and had to hang on late to defeat Grayling 62-53 on Friday night at the Gillespie Gym.  Alpena shot 64% from the free throw line, which allowed Grayling to get back into the game after trailing by as much as 19-points.  Going into the fourth quarter, the Wildcats led the Vikings by 14 points but a 9-0 run by Grayling brought them back into the game.  Leading by only five points, Alpena iced the game making four of their final six free throws.  Maddie Voltz led the Wildcats with 17 points, Allie DeRocher added 13 points, and Macy Dickinson had eight.  Alpena (2-1, 1-0 BNC) are at Cheboygan on Tuesday night.

Wildcats Storm Back in 2nd half, Top Gaylord

GAYLORD, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Girls Basketball team stormed back from a fourteen-point halftime deficit to earn a 48-45 victory over Gaylord on Thursday night.  Gaylord blew open a close game with a 16-3 run in the 2nd quarter to take a 34-20 halftime lead.  After the break the Wildcats turned up the defensive pressure and limited the Blue Devils to four points in the 3rd quarter.  Offensively, Allison DeRocher took over the game scoring 12 of her 15 points in the 2nd half.  Alpena trailed 38-32 entering the 4th quarter and got six points from Abbie Funk in the final eight minutes to earn the hard-fought victory.  DeRocher led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Funk added 12 and Maddie Voltz had 11.  Alpena (1-1, 1-0 BNC) will host Grayling on Friday night.

Blue Devils Top Wildcats in Home Opener

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Girls Basketball team opened the 2018-2019 season at home with a 47-28 loss to the Sault Blue Devils on Tuesday night at the Gillespie Gymnasium.  The two teams went back and forth in the opening quarter with the Sault holding a 13-12 lead after the first eight minutes.  A 9-2 2nd quarter by the Blue Devils pushed the halftime lead to 22-14, and the Wildcats could never get any closer.  Alpena was led by Anna Young's 6 points and Mollie Girard's five points.  The Blue Devils were led by Ashtyn Bell, a Lake Superior State commit, with 10 points.  The Wildcats are home on Friday, December 7 when they host Grayling at 7pm.
