Wildcats Season Ends in Quarter Finals

MT. PLEASANT, MI - The Alpena Softball team's postseason run ended on Tuesday with a 5-0 loss to #7 Caledonia at Central Michigan University.  Caledonia rallied with 3 runs in the 5th and 2 runs in the 6th to break open a scoreless tie.  Jade Schultz, Riley Alexander, and Emily Vivian each had hits for the Wildcats who struggled to mount any type of offense against Caledonia's standout pitcher Sammie Gehrls.  Gehrls, who will play basketball and softball at Grand Valley State, struck out nine Wildcats and only allowed three hits.  Schultz took the loss for Alpena, allowing five runs on 12 hits.

 

Alpena finishes the season 28-13 overall with Big North Conference, District, and Regional Championships.

Wildcats Win Regional Title

SAGINAW, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Softball team won the Regional Championship on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Bay City Western in 9-innings. The Warriors got on the board early with a 2-Run Home Run in the top of the 1st. Alpena got a Solo Home Run from Emma Fraser in the 3rd to get to within one run. Tara Myers and Fraser hit back to back Home Runs in the 5th to give Alpena the 3-2 lead. The lead didn’t last long as the Warriors tied it in the top of the 6th and scratched across a run in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead. The Wildcats tied the game when Sydney Chojnacki scored as Abbie Funk legged out an infield single. The game remained tied until the 9th when Chojnacki led off with a solid single to left. Then the craziness began when Myers laid down a perfect bunt, Chojnacki scooted all the the way to third, and Myers got to second. After hitting three Home Runs during the day, Fraser was intentionally walked. Jade Schultz hit a slow roller to third and Chojnacki scored the winning run when the throw was dropped by the catcher. 

 

Alpena (28-12) will play Caledonia in the Division 1 Quarterfinals at Central Michigan on June 12 at 4:00pm.

Wildcats Knock Off Lapeer, 4-2

SAGINAW, MI - The Alpena Wildcats advanced to the Regional Championship game by knocking off Lapeer 4-2 at Saginaw State University on Saturday. Emma Fraser broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fourth with a two run Home Run. Jade Schultz, thanks to some sparkling defense, made the lead stick. Abbie Funk and Emily Vivian each had RBi singles in the 3rd to tie the game at 2-2. Alpena (27-12) will play Bay City Western in the Regional Championship. 

Wildcats win 1st District Title since 2014

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Alpena Wildcats Varsity Softball team won the elusive District Championship with a pair of victories at Traverse City West High School on Friday.  In game 1, the Wildcats faced a team in Marquette that has often been the one ending their season.  This year, it was the Wildcats that prevailed in a 6-1 dominating victory over the Redmen.  Jade Schultz struck out 11 in the victory and was helped offensively by a two-run 1st inning.  Abbie Funk's RBI triple got the Wildcats on the board early, and they quickly made it 2-0 on an RBI Sacrifice fly by Allie DeRocher.  The Wildcats blew open a 2-1 game in the fifth with four more runs.  Emma Fraser had a two-run single to score Dayna LaBell and Sydney Chojnacki. Funk singled with two outs and Emily Vivian had a two-run single to score Fraser and Funk.

In the championship, the Wildcats faced the BNC runner-up TC Central Trojans.  Alpena again jumped on the Trojans by taking a 4-0 lead into the 6th inning before Central rallied to tie the game.  Emma Fraser, who was 5-for-5 in the game, had two hits in the seventh inning. Alpena sent 12 batters to the plate and took advantage of several walks in their 8-run inning.  

The Wildcats (25-11) will travel to Saginaw Valley State University on June 9 for the Regionals.

Wildcats finish Regular Season with Sweep of Hillman

HILLMAN, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team wrapped up the 2018 Regular Season with a pair of non-league victories over Hillman on Tuesday afternoon.  In game 1, Alpena scored 11-runs in the top of the 1st, including two doubles from Emma Fraser, on their way to a 16-1 mercy victory.  Fraser pitched the first two innings before giving way to Kali Spomer.  Abbie Funk was 4-for-4 with three singles and a double.

In game 2, Alpena scored four runs in the 3rd inning to erase a 1-0 deficit before pulling away late for the 10-1 victory.  Fraser, Spomer, and Emiliy Vivian all split the pitching duties for the Wildcats.  Offensively, Sydney Chojnacki and Dayna LaBell each had two hits.

Alpena (23-11) will play Marquette at 11:00am on Friday in the District Semi-Finals at TC West High School.

Wildcats win 8th Straight BNC Title

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team earned a split on Tuesday afternoon with the Traverse City Trojans but still wrapped up their 8th straight conference championship.  In game 1, it was the Trojans taking a slim 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning before Alpena exploded for 7-runs in their 9-3 win.  With the bases loaded with 1 out, Maddy Saddler sent a pitch-hit single past the drown in infield to tie the game.  With the next at-bat, Emma Fraser gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a 3-run double.  Jade Schultz got the win in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out 12.  Emily Vivian went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored

In game 2, the Trojans haded the Wildcats their only conference loss with a 13-10 extra innings win.  The Trojans turned the tables on Alpena by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh.  The big blow came in the 9th when the Trojans blew open a 8-8 tie with five runs.  Emma Fraser continued her big day by hitting a solo Home Run and an RBI.  Emily Vivian went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Alpena (20-10 overall, 9-1 BNC) will travel to Bay City for a tournament this weekend.

Wildcats sweep Northmen

PETOSKEY, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team remained perfect in the Big North Conference with a sweep of Petoskey on Tuesday afternoon.  In game 1, the Wildcats took an early lead and never looked back for a 17-8 win.  Emily Vivian and Jade Schultz paced the Wildcats to an early lead with a pair of 2-RBI hits.  Schultz was also strong in the circle striking out six.  Abbie Funk and Allie Funk, Dayna LaBell, and Tara Myers each had three hits.

In Game 2, the Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-1 win.  Jade Schultz continued her dominating day by throwing a complete game.

 

Wildcats win two, fall to Top Ranked Clarkston

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Softball team hosted the Alpena Invitational on Saturday at the Alpena Softball Complex.  The Wildcats went 2-1 on the day, including a match-up with the #1 ranked team in Division 1.  Alpena earned wins over Imlay City (10-2) and Garden City (15-5).  Clarkston, ranked #1 in Division 1, showed why they are favorites to earn a trip to MSU in June by dominating the Wildcats 10-0.

Alpena (10-9, 4-0 BNC) are at Petoskey on Tuesday, host Cheboygan on Wednesday, travel to TC West on Thursday, and play in the Pinconning Tournament on Saturday. 

Wildcats top Cougars

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team knocked off Garden City 8-7 on Friday afternoon at the Alpena Softball complex. Leading the offense was Maddy Saddler that hit a home run, and Emma Fraser had three hits. Fraser also earned the win while Jade Schultz pitched a scoreless 7th for the save. Alpena (9-8) hosts the Alpena Invitational on May 12.

Wildcats Sweep Blue Devils to Remain Perfect in BNC

Wildcats go 1-2 on day of Grand Blanc Tourney

GRAND BLANC, MI - The Alpena Girls Softball team went 1-2 on Day 1 of the Grand Blanc Tournament on Saturday. The Wildcats lost to Eaton Rapids 5-2, Beat Milford 10-7, and lost to Rochester Hills Stoney Creek 6-0. Wildcats are now 6-8 overall.

Wildcats sweep Vikings in BNC opener

CADILLAC, MI - The Alpena Girls Softball team kicked off Big North play with a two game sweep of Cadillac on Tuesday. In game 1, Alpena pounced on the Vikings for a 17-5 win and cruised in game two, 14-3. Abbie Funk went 8 for 8 on the day, Emma Fraser 5 for 6 with 4 extra base hits, and Emily Vivian continues her hot streak by going 6 for 7 with 3 doubles. The Wildcats (5-6, 2-0 BNC) are in Grand Blanc this weekend.

Wildcats Split With Ogemaw Heights

ALPENA, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team opened up the home part of their schedule by splitting a doubleheader with Ogemaw Heights on Monday. In game 1, Alpena was led by Jade Schultz’s complete game shutout and got timely hitting from Emily Vivian en route to the 3-0 victory. Schultz fanned 10 Falcons and had one hit at the plate. 

In game two, Ogemaw Heights outscored the Wildcats for the 15-12 victory. Riley Alexander had three hits in the loss. Y

Softball goes 1-2 over the weekend in Imlay City

IMLAY CITY, MI - The Alpena Wildcat Varsity Softball team played in the Imlay City Invitational on Saturday going 1-2.  The Wildcats beat Detroit Country Day 11-0 in game 1 before falling to host Imlay City 4-2 and St Clair 12-7.  Offensively, the Wildcats was lead by Dayna Labell, Emily Vivian, and Jade Schultz.  Alpena (2-5) finally opens up their schedule on Monday when they host Ogemaw Heights.

Wildcats fall to Indians, blast Colts for first win

CHESANING, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team earned their first win of 2018 with a 15-0 mercy of Troy in the second game on Friday afternoon. In game 1, the Wildcats fell to host Chesaning 3-1. Alpena (1-3) travels to Imlay City on Saturday. 

Softball Drops Pair to Swan Valley

SAGINAW, MI - The Alpena Varsity Softball team opened up the 2018 season by dropping a doubleheader to Saginaw Swan Valley (5-1 and 12-7).  Mallory Kautz and Jade Schultz each homered during the season opening series.
