Wildcats Win Regional Championship

BAY CITY, MI - The Alpena Boys Track team put on a clinic at the MHSAA Regionals and won their first Regional Championship since 1944.  The Wildcats put up a total of 128 points, which was 57 points higher than runner-up Flint Carmen Ainsworth.  Josh Smith (1,600 run), Aden Smith (3,200 run), Gabe Bullis (pole vault) and Eli Winter (shot put) all won regional titles as the Wildcats placed athletes in 8 different state final events.  The 3200 relay team of Josh Smith, Aden Smith, Drew Seabase, and Jadon Duncan set a new school record (7:52.12)in their Regional Championship performance.  The Wildcats also had Seabase (800m), Eli Winter (discus), Arthur Paad (discus), Aden Smith (1600m), Haydn Goebel (110 hurdles), and Josiah Matuzak (pole vault) qualify for the state finals.

The Girls Track team also had three athletes qualify for the state finals with two winning their events.  Faith Weide, who will play at Western Michigan in the fall, won the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 1 1/4 inches.  Karli Myers won the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet, 3.2 inches.  Maddy Boyd, who will run at Central Michigan in the fall, qualified for the state finals in the 3200m run.

The Division 1 Track State Finals will be June 1 at East Kentwood High School.

Boys first, Girls third at Petoskey

PETOSKEY, MI - The Alpena Boys and Girls tracks teams both had strong performances in a quad meet at Petoskey on Wednesday afternoon.  The boys' team came out first overall with multiple first-place finishers.  Eli Winter set the school record in the discus with a toss of 173 feet, breaking his own previous record.  Other boys first-place finishers were Aden Smith (800m and 1,600m run), Josh Smith (3,200 run); 800 Relay (Kody Bertrand, Dylan Fleck, Zach Schaedig, and Bob Sheldon), 3,200 Relay (Drew Seabase, Kolton Goebel, Aden Smith, Josh Smith), Eli Winter (shot put and discus), Gabe Bullis (pole vault), and Jadon Duncan (long jump).

The girls team finished third overall with several impressive performances.  Tiffany Foster won the 400m run, Maddy Boyd won the 1,600m and 3,200m run, Faith Weide won the shot put and discus, and Karli Meyers won the pole vault.

Wildcats Have Strong Effort at Swayze-Graves Relays

MIDLAND, MI - The Alpena Boys and Girls Track teams had strong performances at the Swayze-Graves Relays in Midland.  The boys finished second overall with multiple first-place finishers.  The Wildcats had first-place performances in the shot put (Gabe Bullis, George Pilarski, Sam Romero and Eli Winter), Discus (George Pilarski, Sam Romero and Eli Winter), 100 Shuttle Hurdles (Zach Zaborney, Wenton Harrison, Ryan Voltz, Bradley Thompson), 2-mile relay (Drew Seabase, Jadon Duncan, Aden Smith, Josh Smith), Mid Distance (Drew Seabase, Cooper Bright, Kolton Goebel, Josh Smith), and the 4-Mile Relay (Aden Smith, Josh Smith, Drew Seabase, Jacob Kochanski).  

The girls track team also had several strong performances with three first-place finishes.  Maddy Boyd won the 1,600m run and Faith Weide win the shot put.  The Four-mile relay team of Maddy Boyd, Madi Szymanski, Molly Dickinson, and Grace Mitchel also finished first overall.

Boys Track Victorious in Davison

DAVISON, MI - The Alpena boys track team came away with a first-place trophy in the medium school division   Alpena also took first place overall with a point total of 159.5.  

Eli winter led the way with a school record toss of 170’ 1” I the discus in taking first place.  Other first-place finishes were josh smith in the 800 (2:01.05), Haydn Goebel in the 110 hurdles (16.59), Gabe Bullis in pole vault (14’ 9”) and the 4x800 (8:13.9) of Drew Seabase, Jacob Kochanski, Aden Smith and Josh Smith. 

2nd place finishers were Haydn Goebel in High Jump(5’9”), Eli Winter in shot put (48’5”), Drew Seabase in the 800 (2:01.7), Josh Smith 1600 (4:30.2), Aden Smith 3200 (9:58.7) and Haydn Goebel 110 hurdles (43.38). 

3rd Place finishers were Zach Zaborney 300 hurdles (44.78), Caleb Zaborney in the high jump (5’6”), Josiah Matuzak in the pole vault (11’) and Zack Zaborney in long jump (20’ 3.75”)

4th place: Drew Seabase 1600 (4:44.6), Zach Zaborney 110 hurdles (44.78) and the 4x200 relay (1:38.74) Kody Bertrand, Dylan Fleck, Cooper Bright, and Robert Sheldon. 

Alpena travels to Traverse City Central on Tuesday. 

Girls Track Finishes 9th in Davison

DAVISON, MI - The Alpena Girls Track team won 23 medals in 12 events and finished 9th overall at the Shake Off The Rust Invitational at Davison on Friday.  Maddy Boyd broke the school record in the 3200 running an 11:21.  Boyd was also 2nd in the 1600 and the 3200.  Madi Szymanski placed 1st in the 800 and 2nd in the 1600.  Savannah Thomson placed 2nd in the high hurdles and 3rd in the low hurdles.   Faith Weide was 2nd in the shot put and 3rd in the Discus.
